Nobuo Tanaka is working at a lab, but feels really down as he’s battling a bad case of the flu. It’s chilling, beautiful and filled with all the right ingredients for a spooky story. The artwork of the ship’s interior, together with the atmospheric setting and eerie vibe throughout makes this a solid science fiction ghost story. Magnetic Rose is the longest of the three segments, and I guess the best description would be that it’s a little bit of Event Horizon mixed with a haunted house tale, and it’s my favorite of the three. They split up in order to find the source of the distress signal, and start experiencing what could be perceived as paranormal encounters, like strange noises and visions… The ship belonged to a opera diva named Eva Friedel, who disappeared after her fiancé was murdered. Intrigued, they want to take a closer look, and once inside, they are met with a splendor of European interior and furnished rooms showing various states of decay…almost like a haunted house in space. They decide to respond to it, and come upon a spaceship graveyard orbiting a giant space station. The crew at The Corona, a deep space salvage freighter, encounters a distress signal while out on a mission. Since there are three segments, I’ll write about each of them separately:

While Katsuhiro is best known for his work on Akira (both the manga and the movie), he does have other works that are worthy of recognition, and Memories is one of them. Overall, it's recommended for anime enthusiasts.Memories (aka Otomo Katsuhiro’s Memories) is an animated science fiction anthology film from 1995, and it is based on three of Katsuhiro Otomo’s short manga stories: Magnetic Rose, Stink Bomb, and Cannon Fodder. It's like tasting an exquisite cuisine for the first time. Memories is bound to evoke mixed feelings with the three wildly different stories. The character designs look unappealing and is definitely a depart from usual Japanese characters. There are lots of pencil hatching and sketch marks which probably would look better on paper, or in need to be processed by the clean up department. Fans familiar with Otomo's work will find the style unfamiliar. The animation uses a lot of long panning shorts which is quite unique. Gosh, life really doesn't have any meaning in that place. This is a grim depiction of war, the monotonous life lead by people who's only purpose in life is that of the military's. Everyday, the city fires a huge cannon away, supposedly at the enemy we never see. Katsuhiro Otomo's "Cannon Fodder" looks at the life of a child and his father at work in a city that's has cannons fitted to houses. It's still quite entertaining and the use of quirky Jazz music adds to the wackiness of the situation. The plot is really simple, which by Japanese anime standards it means really weak and unoriginal. I find this animation quite funny with the dark humour. The government then sends out the military to stop him, but to no avail. To make matters worse, an official tells Tanaka to deliver the research to him in Tokyo, not realising that he's going to wipe out every living thing along the way. The medicine part of a top secret research. A young lab assistant Nobuo Tanaka mistakenly took some experimental medicine and turns himself into a human stink bomb, a biological weapon capable killing everyone within his vicinity. "Stink Bomb" is a comical story of what can go wrong with really bad body odor. Opera music is blended beautifully with the animation giving a grand atmosphere while we know that something is going to go wrong, and eventually does. The plot is mysterious and haunting, always seeking to surprise. This is the strongest piece among among the three. She ensnares the two men using holograms, creating fantasies of their desires. The signal was actually sent by the artificial intelligence of the singer, seemingly lonely and wants companionship. It's like discovering a lost world among a heap of debris. While most of the station is collapsing, many parts of the opera house are actually still intact, and the interior designs are amazingly detailed.

Unknown to them, this station used to be an opera house of a famous but faded opera diva. "Magnetic Rose" is about two space crew who are sent to investigate a distress signal from derelict space station. Memories is a collection of three anime shorts: "Magnetic Rose" directed by Koji Morimoto, "Stink Bomb" by Tensai Okamura and "Cannon Fodder" by Katsuhiro Otomo.
